A highly erodible spillway batter, due to dispersible sodic soil, suffered massive erosion during an overflow period. This erosion damage threatened the integrity and longevity of the spillway, leaving it susceptible to further degradation.
Vetiver was applied due to its notable effectiveness to address erosion from high velocity water flows, and its capacity to thrive in and strengthen sodic soils. A Veticon Consulting Vetiver System design was applied to ensure long-term stability and protection against future overflow scenarios.
The Vetiver hedgerows served to strengthen the soil ensuring the full stabilisation of the spillway batters after 2 summer growth periods. The spillway has successfully been protected since 2001.
